TRAINING PSYCHIATRISTS
The manual is specifically designed to help a psychiatrist learn how to serve as the key mental health component in a Three Component Model (3CM™) of depression management in primary care. It is most helpful if the psychiatrist can attend a Clinician Education Workshop as part of the psychiatrist’s initial training. The workshops begin a process of change that will enable participants to implement the 3CM™. Reading this manual and participating in the workshops prepare the psychiatrist to help in the process. A DVD/video, illustrating a case example of the model is shown at these workshops and should be reviewed by the psychiatrist in conjunction with reviewing this manual. The DVD/video stream link shows the longer video stream which includes examples of a care manager supervision call with the consulting psychiatrist.

If the 3CM™ has already been implemented in a health care organization and the psychiatrist is part of an expansion, then reading this manual and participating in ongoing care management supervision calls is a helpful alternative in preparing a psychiatrist to become part of the system.

In addition to providing supervision to care managers, the psychiatrist plays an important educational role for primary care clinicians. Clinicians receive individual feedback from the psychiatrist indirectly on care manager report forms or directly from the psychiatrist via email, fax, or telephone about specific patient management issues. The manual provides examples and details about this process. In addition, the psychiatrist provides educational reinforcement via a 30 to 60 minute booster session two to three months after the 3CM™ has been in place. This provides an opportunity for clinicians to talk about problems with implementation and how to solve them. The manual discusses details of these educational processes.
