This PowerPoint presentation was created by Perry Dickinson, MD of the University of Colorado for the American Academy of Family Physicians' 2000 Annual Clinical Focus on Mental Health. Since then it has become even more apparent that depression needs to be managed over the long term. Patients in remission from an episode of depression need ongoing primary care attention to prevent relapse or to recognize the symptoms of relapse early on. This long term approach to management results in better outcomes as supported by a number of recent randomized controlled trials listed in the website bibliography.
